defining moment

defining moment
defining moment
dates from the 1970s and denotes an event or occasion considered with hindsight as epitomizing or determining subsequent events or circumstances. Nothing much is ever really ‘defined’ in any sense of that word, and the expression is often no more than a pseudo-rhetorical synonym for turning point, a modern cliché devoid of genuine meaning:

• But did this London Fashion Week live up to its promise? Was it a defining moment in fashion history or a parade of fashion dinosaurs? —Daily Telegraph, 2007.

Modern English usage. 2014.
